Fully electric and handles like a...Golf GTI?
Making its live debut here in Frankfurt just a day before the show opens to the media, Volkswagen has revealed its latest concept, the ID Crozz II, a zero emission SUV concept that previews the eventual production version, which Volkswagen says could arrive by 2020. For now, it’s the next step in the ID concept family, which already includes the ID, ID Buzz, and the first ID Crozz. VW describes the new concept’s body style as both an SUV and a four-door coupe, which is pretty spot-on.

Painted in "Hibiscus Red Metallic," the ID Crozz II exterior features crisp, clean lines, and a roof with a high-gloss black exterior finish. The headlights incorporate LED units and generate a cool light graphic. Step inside and "Open Space" is the theme. Notice the lack of B-pillars, allowing for the large swinging and sliding doors to be opened even wider. VW also says it’s possible to transport a crossbike without issue. Other interesting technological bits include the CleanAir system which, as you likely expected, allows for passengers to see the quality of the air they’re breathing, and the system’s filtering status. There’s also a new voice assistant that allows for opening and closing the doors on vocal command.

The fully automated driving mode can also be activated or deactivated via voice command. And, of course, the ID Crozz II is zero emissions. Power comes from a pair of electric motors, one located at the front axle, the other at the rear. With its 225 kW of power, the EV has a top speed of 112 mph and up to 310 miles on a single charge. The battery can also be rapidly charged up to 80 percent in just 30 minutes. VW says the concept handles like a Golf GTI (yes, really) thanks to an ideal weight distribution and newly developed MacPherson struts. VW has also revealed the (definitely not for the US) new 197-hp Polo GTI, Golf Sportsvan and T-Roc R-Line. But it’s the ID Crozz II Concept that VW sees as its future, and perhaps even previews a future Golf.
