Now we just need to wait until next year to find out if the Chiron can set a new production car speed record.
We already know that the Bugatti Chiron’s acceleration and deceleration is frighteningly fast - but now it’s official. While Bugatti won’t be revealing any new cars at this year’s Frankfurt Motor Show, the automaker couldn’t resist reminding us about the hypercar’s phenomenal performance capabilities, announcing that the Chiron has smashed a new world record. Behind the wheel was former Formula One driver Juan Pablo Montoya, who accelerated the Chiron from 0 to 248.55 mph and back to 0 again in just 41.96 seconds over 1.933 miles.

Of course, this not only demonstrates the Chiron’s remarkable acceleration, but also its neck-snapping stopping power. After reaching 248.55 mph in 32.6 seconds and 8,599 feet, Montoya brought the 1,479-hp car to a complete halt in only 9.1 seconds and 1,610 feet thanks to the Chiron’s special carbon ceramic brake discs, specifically developed brake calipers with titanium pistons, and rear wing. According to Bugatti, this represents "the fastest time ever reached and officially measured for this driving maneuver for a production vehicle throughout the world." The test run was supervised and officially certified by SGS-TUV Saar, a world leader in inspection, testing, verification, and certification.

Naturally, Montoya, who currently races in the IndyCar series, jumped at the chance to push the Bugatti Chiron to its limits. “My first thought was that I would do anything Bugatti wanted in order to drive this incredible car,” he said. “When you are driving the Chiron for the first time and taking it easy, you cannot imagine how powerful it is. But as soon as you open the throttle, you hear the turbochargers pull up and all this torque comes in, and it just does not stop. It is like a linear power curve to happiness.” Remarkably, Montoya didn’t even wear a racing suit or helmet during the record run, which is a testament to the Chiron’s refinement even at extreme speed.

"Of course, the Chiron is a super sports car that requires your full attention when you are behind the wheel. At the same time, it gave me such a feeling of security and reliability that I was entirely relaxed and really enjoyed myself during my two days with the car." “Bugatti is the first car brand that not only calculates how fast a car can go from zero to 400 to zero on a computer. We actually drove it,” Bugatti’s President Wolfgang Durheimer expained. ”Where others are satisfied with theory, we validate our data with real-life values. Just like we did with the Chiron.” The record-breaking Chiron will be presented at this week’s Frankfurt Motor Show.

Out of the 500 cars planned for production, 300 have already been sold. Currently, the Chiron is restricted to an electronically limited top speed of 261 mph, but Bugatti believes even more speed can be extracted out of its 8.0-liter W12 engine. We’ll have to wait until next year to find out as Bugatti is planning to attempt a new production car speed record in the Chiron.
