That helps this budget pony car surpass the $94,000 Porsche 911 Carrera.
It may not be the supercar-crushing Dodge Challenger SRT Demon that’s become the banned drag strip buzzword, but Ford could care less about a car that, at least according to current plans, will never see more than 3,300 copies roam the streets. It’s much more content stealing the title as the world’s best-selling sports car from foreign rivals using the Mustang, and to twist the knife in Porsche’s belly even further, the Blue Oval has announced the revamped Mustang GT’s straight line stats.

If you’ll recall, the new ‘Stang, a refreshed version of the hugely successful globalized independent rear-ended version that’s on sale today, is getting much more than a facelift. Along with the looks, it loses its lackluster V6, sees its 5.0-liter Coyote V8 gain 25 horsepower and 20 lb-ft of torque, and swaps the old six-speed automatic gearbox for Ford’s new 10-speed automatic. To take advantage of the hardware, Ford has given the new Mustang a Drag Strip mode and made Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S tires available with the Performance Pack, causing the stopwatch to halt before the 4.0-second mark when launching the ‘Stang from 0-60 mph. Like is short, so why not win races faster and take full advantage?

As Ford is more than happy to point out, that makes the new Mustang GT quicker than the $94,000 Porsche 911 Carrera. While Ford’s European customers are less likely to care about drag strip numbers, the Mustang’s success in the region, as well as in the US, could be exacerbated by the improved handling and power that the refreshed ‘Stang delivers, especially when considering one of the main pieces of hardware behind the muscle car’s improved 0-60 mph time: that 10-speed auto. “Typically, when you shift gears, you give up time," says Carl Widmann, Mustang chief engineer.

He added, "In Drag Strip mode, the engine torque doesn’t drop when you’re shifting. You get peak engine torque and horsepower straight through thanks to our new Ford-built 10-speed transmission.” Those who opt for the EcoBoost 4-cylinder won't have to go without having fun either. While power stays in the same 310-horse neighborhood, torque is up by 30 lb-ft for a total of 350 lb-ft on tap. This baby Mustang is therefore good for a 0-60 mph time under five seconds, making these siblings a dynamic duo that's bound to put the hurt on cars costing twice as much.

To celebrate the Mustang's literal and metaphorical leap forward, Ford decided to compile a video of all of the amazing things you can do in under four seconds in case you don't have Mustang GT funds and want to be just as quick.
