You know Lamborghini was going to make one for the show-offs.
It takes a certain kind of person to splurge on a Lamborghini. Typical buyers have a penchant for showing off, probably stemming from that same need for approval and recognition that pushed them hard enough to earn Lamborghini money in the first place, but the point is that Italian dream machine maker knows its customers well. Even before the Germans took hold of the company, Lamborghini offered drop tops throughout its lineup, and the Aventador roadster and Huracan Spyder currently fill that space.

But Lambo’s hottest Huracan model, the Performante, is notably missing a topless variant. Or at least it was until Autogespot and Giammiseri Photography spotted one testing in Gardone Riviera, Italy. The signature rear wing, stripes on the lower end painted the same colors as the Italian flag, and aerodynamic upgrades make it plain that this is a Performante. CarScoops even notes that the wheels it wears are of the same single spoke design as its hardtop cousin. The only camouflage it wears seems to be covering the engine bay, wing, and hood. Expect the engine cover to be different than the coupe’s for a few reasons.

Lamborghini could keep the mechanically operated unit at the expense of weight, but it the rear end would have to be modified to play nice with the special ALA aerodynamics system that can vary the amount of air that’s channeled over the rear wing. Though Lamborghini stole the title of fastest production car around the Nurburgring from the Porsche 918 Spyder, the German supercar still technically holds the title of being the fastest production drop top around the Green Hell. We fully expect that 5.2-liter V10 to remain pushing 631 horsepower to all four wheels, giving the Huracan Performante Spyder a good shot at dethroning the Porsche from that position.

However, the Huracan Performante coupe relied heavily on its special aerodynamics system to beat the Porsche, and if the loss of a roof alters the aerodynamics system too drastically, it could force the Huracan Performante Spyder to take a back seat to Stuttgart's drop top. Guess all you want but the answer will only come when Lamborghini unveils the Huracan Performante Spyder later this year.
