It may deliver LaFerrari-beating acceleration but it won’t even cost six figures.
Aside from simple nonchalant badassery, the entire appeal of the muscle car genre lies in its ability to offer stratospheric horsepower figures at a fraction of the price. Cars like the Camaro ZL1 produce 650 horsepower, 9 more than the 641 horse McLaren 650S, for just over $63,000, which makes it an incredible bargain against the $345,000 British supercar. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon, however, is in another realm entirely, being one of the only cars ever built to be a factory-ready drag strip race car.

On the one hand, the fact that it’s a muscle car should indicate that it will be relatively affordable given the performance it delivers, but it’s also stuffed full of technology never before used on a production vehicle. Included in the package is a TransBrake, special Drag Mode suspension, and even multiple fuel pumps to accommodate for different octane levels. Most other automakers would over inflate the price due to the hardware, but not FCA. Sitting with Tim Kuniskis, Head of Passenger Car Brands at Fiat Chrysler, Road and Track learned that the Challenger SRT Demon will stick to the typical muscle car recipe by offering its 840 horsepower wares for cheap despite being one of the first production cars that can pull off a wheelie.

Kuniskis iterated, "Obviously [the price] will be more than a regular Hellcat, but it's gonna be well below six figures.” The term “Well below” is a relative one, meaning Kuniskis could be talking about anywhere from $5,000 to $20,000 less than the $100k milestone, but for reference, the Challenger Hellcat starts at $64,195. With a sub $100k starting price, the Challenger SRT Demon will not only be the the hardest launching car available, matching the Tesla Model S P100D to 60 mph and beating the Ferrari LaFerrari’s 9.7 second quarter mile with a time of 9.65 seconds, but it could also be the best horsepower per dollar deal on the market. Whatever the price ends up being, expect dealership lines to be long.
