Almost every car in the race got caught up in this metal-crunching pile-up, causing millions of dollars’ worth of damage.
The Chinese Macau street circuit is a notoriously narrow race track with no run offs, so there’s very little margin for error. Combine that with its long straights that enable cars to reach insanely high speeds, and there are usually catastrophic consequences if one driver makes a mistake. That was certainly the case last weekend when the FIA GT World Cup took place at the famous street circuit. Almost every car in the race got caught up in a massive metal-crunching pileup.

During the qualifying race for the GT3 World Cup, Dani Juncadella was in fourth position when he slammed his Mercedes-AMG GT3 into the wall on a blind corner. The damage was minor, but things quickly escalated. Inevitably, the Porsche 911 GT3 R behind it plows into the Mercedes racecar, completely blocking the track.

With no time to react or any room to make avoiding action, another 14 cars piled into each other on the same corner. Unsurprisingly, the race was stopped for an hour to clear the wreckage. Out of the 20 cars that entered the race, only four managed to survive unscathed. Four cars involved in the crash were repaired and re-entered the race when it was restarted with only eight cars on the grid. Fortunately, no-one was injured in the 16-car pileup, which has to be one of the worst accidents in GT racing history. Among the cars that got caught up in the carnage were GT3 racing variants of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Audis, BMWs, Porsches and Mercedes-AMGs, resulting in millions of dollars’ worth of damage.
