Lamborghini's upcoming Urus SUV will be a game-changer for the company.
Five years after the concept debuted at Beijing, the Lamborghini Urus will be making its world debut in just a few weeks - and it promises to be a game changer. After showing off the LM200 spiritual successor’s sand-driving mode that enables it to tackle desert dunes, Lamborghini has released another teaser video previewing the Urus, giving us a further insight into the development of its first SUV in over 20 years. Chief Project Management Officer Matteo Ortenzi discusses some of the challenges the company has faced.

“It is often being said these days that Urus will be a Lamborghini game changer, and it certainly is,” Ortenzi said. “But it is not only a game changer because we are changing our industrial footprint, or because we will improve our corporate accounts in the coming years. The Urus was the trigger for a change in mentality within the company."

The video gives us a glimpse of the Urus being assembled at Lamborghini’s new facility close the company's factory in Sant'Agata Bolognese, which was built specifically for production of the Urus. We get to see the body shell of a black Urus, the inside of an unfinished cabin, and a brief look at the super SUV’s engine which Lamborghini has already confirmed will be a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 generating 650-hp. After it launches in 2018, a hybrid version is expected to follow a few years later. The production version of the Urus will also ride on the same Volkswagen MLB modular platform that underpins the Porsche Cayenne, Bentley Bentayga and Audi Q7 and feature carbon ceramic brakes like the company’s supercars.

Judging by the video, production of the Urus appears to be fully underway ahead of its debut next month. Lamborghini will be lifting the wraps off the production version of the Urus on December 4th, so there’s not long to wait. Lamborghini is hoping the Urus will help the company double its annual sales in 2019, which means production capacity at its Sant’Agata Bolognese factory will also be doubled.
