Breaking new ground never is.
Several months ago, Henrik Fisker told us his upcoming EMotion EV will feature Level 5 autonomous capabilities. Set to make its official debut this January at the 2018 Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the EMotion could very well be the EV that’ll make Tesla nervous. No other carmaker has produced an EV that infringes upon Tesla’s current status within the EV world. Fisker hopes to change that. Only a few short months away from CES, Henrik Fisker has taken to Twitter to give us a very brief, but telling, update regarding the car’s status.

“Currently working on fully integrating 5 solid-state LIDAR’s for 2018 CES. Not so easy…” Fisker stated. What’s a LIDAR? It’s an acronym that stands for Light Detection and Ranging, essentially a remote sensing method that uses light in the form of a pulsed laser to measure ranges. Think of it as an advanced laser, scanner and GPS system all in one. We’ve long known that those trapezoidal holes in the front end of the car are for a radar sensor, and Fisker further told us there will be additional sensors placed around the car in appropriate positions once autonomy becomes an option.

And now it’s become clear Fisker wants the EMotion to display five solid-state LIDARs in time for the show. Like the man said, it’s not easy to do this. But if Fisker were to be one of the first to accomplish this, then it’d rightly deserve bragging rights. Not a bad way to kick start some great publicity for what could be a game-changing EV.
