Say goodbye to the flat-six.
Like its roadster counterpart, the Porsche Cayman is now turbocharged. That means it’s officially called the 718 Cayman, the third-generation of Porsche’s absolutely fantastic mid-engined coupe. Like the 718 Boxster, the 718 Cayman is now powered by a choice of two turbocharged flat-fours: the base 2.0-liter with 300 hp and 280 lb-ft of torque (available between 1,950 and 4,500 rpms) and the S model’s 2.5-liter with 350 hp and 309 lb-ft (1,900 and 4,500 rpm.

Compared to their naturally aspirated flat-six predecessors, both have an additional 25 hp. The PDK dual-clutch returns as does a six-speed manual but Porsche, of course, favors the former and here’s why: when equipped with the optional Sport Chrono Package and the PDK, the 718 Cayman S will make the sprint from 0-60 mph in four seconds flat. Impressive. Top speed for the 718 Cayman is 170 mph while the 718 Cayman S tops out at 177 mph. Porsche also redesigned the cars’ chassis, now with firmer springs and sway bars as well as retuned shock absorbers that improve lateral grip and tracking stability. Even the steering rack, adapted from the 911 Turbo, has a ten percent quicker on-center ratio compared to the previous Cayman.

The rear wheels are also one-half inch wider, and new tires increase lateral grip as well. Buyers can also opt for the Porsche Torque Vectoring (PTV) and Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), featuring a 10 mm reduced ride height. In another first, the S model can be equipped with the PASM Sport Suspension, lowering the car by 20 mm. Like the 718 Boxster, the 718 Cayman’s exterior may, at first, look the same as before but every panel has been replaced. The front fascia has a sharper profile and the rear fascia appears wider than before thanks to the high-gloss black accent strip.

The taillights are also new and the LED headlights have optional four-point daytime running lights. The new interior is identical to the 718 Boxster’s. Pricing for the 718 Cayman and 718 Cayman S begins at $53,900 and $66,300, respectively. Both will arrive in US dealerships in late November.
