Mercedes Nixes GLK AMG

Audi is doing an RS Q3, and Porsche has the Macan on the way, but AMG is keeping its hands out of that market and off the GLK.
Name just about any Mercedes passenger car, and chances are AMG offers a high-performance version. The Affalterbach-based muscle studio offers hi-po variants of the C, E and S-Class sedans and wagons; the C, CL and CLS-Class coupes; the SLK and SL roadsters; and the ML, GL and G-Class SUVs (not to mention its own SLS and the Black Series models). That amounts to about two dozen different models, with more to come. But despite appearances, AMG will apparently stop short of transforming every new Mercedes model to come down the pipeline.

While it has developed a new all-wheel drive system and turbo four for the A45 and upcoming CLA45 models, it has no such plans for the GLK. The report from Australian website CarAdvice cites none other than AMG’s own vehicle development chief Tobias Moers, who stated that there are no plans to do a high-powered version of the next GLK, just as there has been none of the current model. This despite Audi having recently unveiled the RS Q3 and Porsche coming along with the Macan. There could still be a high-performance GLA crossover however, based on the same architecture that underpins the A-Class.
