Commodore and Falcon Done by 2016

Two longtime Australian rivals are both set to meet their end by 2016 due to poor sales and expensive gasoline. Is this the end of an era?

Like us in the USA, Australians their love rear-wheel-drive muscle cars. Or at least, they used to. According to a new Motor Trend report that originated from an Australian source, the large V8-powered RWD Holden Commodore and Ford Falcon aren't selling very well anymore. In fact, they're now selling at record low numbers. So it should come as no surprise to hear that both GM and Ford have made it clear that their respective sedans will be discontinued outright by 2016.

Rumors regarding the future for both the Commodore and Falcon have been going on for some time but it's only now that we've been given a clear date as to when they'll both cease production. Another big reason for their demise: gas is expensive Down Under, around $6 a gallon. Ford's CEO, Alan Mulally, has confirmed that there are no plans to continue building the Australia-only Falcon after 2016. At this year's Detroit Auto Show, Holden chief Mike Devereux also stated that the VF-series Commodore would only run through that same year. Ford is beginning to shutdown its Australian operations while Holden will continue building the Cruze.
