Alfa Romeo 4C Power Output Revealed

It's been a few years in the making, but Alfa Romeo's upcoming mid-engined 4C sports car will produce 237 horsepower when it arrives in showrooms.

We recently had some spy shots showing Alfa Romeo's upcoming 4C undergoing final testing. But what we haven't been able to confirm is what the power output will be of the mid-engined Porsche Boxster fighter. Until now. Originally reported by Carscoop, a Swiss Alfa Romeo dealer said the Italian automaker has confirmed the mid-engined 4C will be powered by a 1.7-liter turbocharged inline-four that will produce 237 horsepower in the base model. For comparison, the base Boxster/Cayman produces 271 hp.

For those thinking that 237 hp simply isn't enough, consider this: the 4C has a carbon-fiber chassis that will keep overall weight down which in turn will enable it to remain on par performance-wise with the aforementioned Porsches. All told, the 4C will likely weigh less than the Porsches. In regards to pricing, the source states the new Alfa will be priced between 56,000 and 64,000 Euros, depending on trim level. US pricing wasn't available, but don't be surprised to see it offered for around $50k. Global production for the 4C will be limited to only 2,000 units, evenly split between the coupe and roadster variants.

What's interesting is that this number includes the track-only version and the road-going Stradale, both coming in 2014 with even more horsepower. We'll have further details in the coming weeks and expect to see the production Alfa Romeo 4C revealed at the Geneva Motor Show in March.
