VW Golf GTD Revealed

Diesel counterpart to the GTI gets more power and increased efficiency.

Another member has joined the seventh-generation Golf family, with the new Volkswagen Golf GTD revealed ahead of its public debut at the Geneva Motor Show. VW claims it’s "the most powerful GTD ever" thanks to the German carmaker’s new 2.0-liter oil-burning turbo four that delivers 181 horsepower and 280 lb-ft of torque – an increase of 13 and 22, respectively, over the previous model. But where GTD will beat the upcoming new GTI is in efficiency.

When paired with the front-driving six-speed manual, it manages 56 mpg (on the US combined cycle) - an improvement of 12 mpg over the older model - and with the six-speed dual-clutch DSG it drops to 50 mpg. VW claims the Golf GTD can sprint from standstill to 62 mph in 7.5 seconds on to an electronically-limited top speed of 143 mph. By comparison, the sixth-gen model posted figures of 8.1 seconds and 138 mph. Certain styling tweaks distinguish the Golf GTD from other MkVII models. On the outside, there’s smoked LED rear lights with LED license plate illumination.

It also boasts dual chrome tailpipes, 17-inch alloys, wider side sills, a diffuser element and large roof spoiler, while riding on a sport suspension. Inside, the new GTD is kitted out with tartan pattern sport seats, GTD gear shift, trim strips and instrument cluster, black headlining and a sports steering wheel. VW will reveal the new Golf GTD at the Geneva show on March 5, the same day it will start taking orders, with the base price in Germany set at 29,350 Euros.
