Audi Confirms S1 for Production

But dash hopes of an RS1 pocket rocket.

Ever since Audi unleashed the limited edition A1 quattro - a 256 horsepower turbocharged 2.0-liter bundle of joy - fans of the four rings have been praying for a high-performance variant of the A1 to enter the mainstream market. And if sources within Audi are to be believed, their prayers will soon be answered. According to Audi enthusiasts site Fourtitude, a highly placed source at Audi has said the S1 will be introduced "for sure" in 2014, at the time when the current A1 facelift will be rolled out.

The RS1 however, is unlikely to make production given the expense involved in making it and the very price sensitive market. But then again, if the S1 exceeds expectations and the demand is there, the RS1 may find itself back on the table. Audi has a couple of powerplant options for the S1. It can go with the A1 quattro's 2.0-liter TFSI unit or the new 1.8 TFSI. Either way it will have over 200 hp at its disposal, which coupled with the all-wheel drive system should translate to a five-second 0-62mph time and a 155mph top speed. For now, the hot-hatch market is limited to the continent so don't expect the S1 to make it stateside until the arrival of the next generation A1.
