Lola Le Mans Film Car Up for Auction

One of the cars used in the McQueen cult classic is expected to fetch as much as a million when the gavel drops at Silverstone later this month.

The cult classic Steve McQueen movie Le Mans may have opened with a Porsche 911, and McQueen may have driven a 917 in the race around which the film is centered, but the action would have been pretty flat if there weren't cars for him to race against. That's why there were also a handful of Ferrari 512s, and three of the lesser known Lola T70s. Now one of them is going up for auction. This '69 Lola T70 MkIII B appeared in the movie in yellow and was then repainted in Gulf livery before being crashed into the barriers as part of the film.

It was subsequently reconstructed and enjoyed a full racing career in Europe. Complete with a new engine, rebuilt transmission and full FIA certification, this vintage racer is set to go under the hammer at Silverstone for the Race Retro & Classic Car Sale later this month, where it is expected to fetch between £570,000 to £650,000 - that's as much as a million in American greenbacks.
