But the news isn't all bad.
Cadillac’s design studio is busy these days. That’s a very good thing considering the brand’s global aspirations and a testament to a successful future. But all of that work could come with a downside: that wonderfully gorgeous Elmiraj coupe concept which debuted last summer may get pushed aside. In a recent interview, GM design boss Ed Welburn made clear how much he likes the Elmiraj and is pushing hard for it to see production, but was still unable to say for sure whether it’ll end up in showrooms.

So what’s the holdup exactly? Well, GM is basically hesitant to build a large, rear-wheel-drive two-door because the US coupe market isn’t exactly the strongest. The bottom line is that Americans who like large cars also like to have proper rear seats. What’s for sure is that Cadillac will get a new flagship that’ll be above the XTS in the lineup. Its direct competitors will be the likes of the Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series. It’ll come standard with RWD and AWD will be optional. Fortunately, many of the Elmiraj’s design elements will be incorporated into what will surely be a striking final design. Just don’t expect to see it sold as a coupe.
