Cadillac Teases ELR Again

Cadillac getting in on the luxury hybrid game with the ELR. It'll be unveiled next week in Detroit, but in the meantime, GM has released a photo of a disguised prototype.

Cadillac has one of the most hotly-anticipated debuts scheduled for the fast-approaching Detroit Auto Show in the ELR. A more powerful, luxurious and stylish version of the Chevy Volt, the ELR will be Cadillac's first dedicated hybrid model. The ELR was previewed by the Converj concept in 2009, and a few weeks ago Cadillac released a teaser rendering showing the silhouette of the production version. Now it's followed up with an official shot of the camouflaged ELR prototype.

Details are still scarce, but what we're dealing with here is not only Cadillac's first dedicated hybrid vehicle - an “extended range electric vehicle”, otherwise known as a plug-in hybrid - but will also be its first stand-alone two-door model (discounting the sedan-based CTS coupe) since the Corvette-based XLR was discontinued back in 2009. It'll pack a more powerful version of the Volt's gasoline-electric powertrain that pairs an 80hp 1.4-liter inline-four generator with a 149-horsepower electric motor. According to the project's chief engineer, the ELR is "going to change the way people think about luxury and electrification."
