Dodge Announces New Dart GT

Dart GT takes the 184-horsepower place that was supposed to belong to the Dart R/T, but that doesn't mean a more powerful version couldn't still be in the cards.

When Dodge first introduced the new Dart, it promised a performance-oriented R/T model. That never came, but the project has morphed into the Dart GT you see here. Just revealed ahead of its Detroit Auto Show debut, the Dart GT packs a number of enhancements to make the Alfa Rome-based Dodge compact a sportier prospect. That comes down principally to the 2.4-liter Tigershark MultiAir2 four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and 174 lb-ft of torque, mated to either a manual or automatic six-speed.

The package also includes a sportier suspension, 18-inch alloys, dual exhaust pipes and a unique front end. Meanwhile the cabin is appointed in perforated Nappa leather with heated wheel and front seats, remote start, seven-inch TFT instrument cluster, 8.4-inch Uconnect touchscreen and more. All that comes in at $20,995 (before destination), making the Dart GT a heck of a value. It caps the Dart range that already includes SE, SXT, Rallye, Aero and Limited trim levels. Dodge says it's still looking into an R/T model (or, we'd hope, an even more powerful SRT4), but that will likely depend on whether or not they can reliably fit a turbo or surpercharger under the hood.
