Benz Confirms E63 AMG for Detroit

E63 AMG performance sedan now confirmed to join the new sedan, wagon, coupe and convertible versions of the full E-Class family in Detroit next week.

When the doors open at the Detroit Auto Show next week, Mercedes-Benz will be on hand with the facelifted versions of the E-Class sedan, wagon, coupe and cabrio. But we've already seen those. What it has now confirmed, however, is the debut of the E63 AMG performance sedan. Pictured here in this family portrait, the new E63 bears the same updates applied to the standard E-Class sedan - including the unified headlamps and the Sport model's grille - but with a racier front bumper with bigger air intake stretching from ear to ear.

This particular example appears to be wearing bigger wheels (as you'd expect of any AMG model) but with dark spokes and a polished rim. We don't know if AMG has made any changes to the E63's 5.5-liter turbo V8 or its 518-horsepower, 516 lb-ft output, but it will be available (not mandatory) for the first time with 4Matic all-wheel drive, a feature clearly aimed at scooping up customers from Audi. Speaking of which, the E63 AMG won't be the only four-door German supercar coming to the Detroit show, sharing the limelight as it will with the BMW M6 Gran Coupe and rumored Audi RS7 Sportback.
