Subaru to Debut its First Hybrid

Believe it or not, Subaru doesn't currently offer a hybrid model but that's soon about to change.
You'd think that in the automotive industry today, an automaker that doesn't offer a hybrid in its lineup wouldn't be doing too well. That's not at all the case when it comes to Subaru. In fact, the small Japanese automaker is currently experiencing all-time sales records in the US thanks to solid redesigns of its Impreza, Legacy and Outback. The rear-wheel-drive BRZ coupe has further upped the brand's popularity. And yet none of these models sports hybrid technology.

That's all about to change as The Detroit Bureau reports Subaru will be unveiling its first hybrid as early as the New York Auto Show in late March. No other details were given in regards to whether it'll be an all-new model or a hybrid system simply placed into an existing car. Subaru first previewed a hybrid system on its Hybrid Tourer Concept at the 2009 Tokyo Motor Show. It was made up of a direct-injected 2.0-liter boxer mated to a CVT and paired up with an electric motor producing 13 horsepower of assist. Energy was stored in a lithium-ion battery pack that was recharged thanks to brake regeneration and coasting.
