GAC E-Jet Concept Previewed at Detroit

Chinese automaker GAC has revealed its latest concept, the E-Jet, at the Detroit Auto Show.

Amongst the many production cars and concepts currently on display at this year's Detroit Auto Show, only one Chinese automaker presented something at the famed American event. The GAC Group quietly introduced its E-Jet Concept, which may look an awful lot like the just unveiled Mercedes-Benz CLA, but it's what powers the car that's just as interesting. The E-Jet Concept's general powertrain setup is similar to that of what's found in the Chevrolet Volt.

It's a range-extending hybrid that's powered by a 1.0-liter four-cylinder that produces 60 horsepower and 60 lb-ft of torque. However, this is augmented by a permanent magnet motor and a 13 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The battery alone allows the car to travel up to 62 miles before the gas engine kicks in to recharge the battery, extending the overall range to around 372 miles. The car's performance isn't incredible but it's sufficient enough to keep up with the regular flow of traffic. The company claims it can go from 0-31 mph in 4.5 seconds and has a top speed of 100 mph. It's no Tesla Model S in terms of performance, but that's not one of its objectives.

Nothing was said in the official press release regarding a production version, but word has it that the automaker wants the E-Jet to begin rolling off the assembly line sometime later this year. GAC is also looking at the possibility of a US market debut as well.
