Tesla Model X Unveiled in Detroit

An updated and near production-ready version of the Model X SUV has been revealed at the 2013 Detroit Motor Show.
Tesla revealed the Model X crossover last year, and the third model in the marque's lineup has now popped up in Detroit looking practically production ready.
Based on the same platform as the Model S, the four-wheel drive Model X electric SUV will enter production in 2014 at the Tesla factory in Fremont, California. Previously the Model X was seen in black and by bringing a revised model in white with restyled alloy wheels coupled with black and white leather interior, the EV maker is showing prospective buyers what their future cars could look like.

Like the Model S, Tesla has fitted a flat battery pack under the floorpan of the Model X, maximizing interior space and making room for seven adults seated in three rows. The car's signature feature however is the double-hinged "falcon doors." "But they're clearly Gullwing doors!" we hear you cry. Not according to chief designer Franz Von Holzhausen who says that being double hinged makes them unique and thus worthy of a new name. Unlike traditional Gullwing doors, the X's Falcon doors can open in very tight spaces and allow for large openings. In fact the doors enable you to stand in the second and easily access the third row.
Staying inside, and we find the same 17-inch touchscreen infotainment display from the Model S with the cabin equally well appointed. Sold with a 60 or 85kWh battery, the X will share a similar range to the S, so up to 300 miles on a single charge, while Tesla boasts a 0-60mph time of less than five seconds. All-wheel drive is also expected to be offered as an option. Priced between $60,000 and $90,000, the Model X will go on sale later this year. Deliveries of the Tesla Model X will begin early 2014, and over $40 million in advances sales have already been booked.
