Volkswagen Surprises with GTI Concept in Paris

Volkswagen reveals a GTI concept design study that looks remarkably close inside and out to a production-ready model.
Only a few weeks after the debut of the seventh-generation Golf, Volkswagen surprised showgoers in Paris by unveiling a pre-production version of the new GTI. The images before you are not the final production version, but they're clearly a few stages beyond the concept stage, too. As you can tell, the next-gen GTI will continue with familiar styling traits such as a plaid interior, red brake calipers and a black honeycomb grille with the red pinstripe and GTI badge.

Power will come from a 2.0-liter turbocharged direct-injection inline-four with 217 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Buyers will once again choose from either a six-speed manual or dual-clutch gearbox. Performance is projected at 6.6 seconds to 62 and a 153mph top speed. An optional performance pack will raise output to 227hp for a 6.5 second sprint and a 155-mph top speed. The aid of a standard Stop/Start system will give the next GTI improved fuel economy numbers without sacrificing the driving experience.
