V40 Goes Off-Road with New Cross Country Version

Swedish sport-hatch gets the soft-roader treatment in pursuit of BMW X1 territory.
Audi has the Allroad range. Subaru has the Outback. Volkswagen has the Cross line. Volvo calls its soft-roaders Cross Country, and has now applied the treatment to the V40, the Swedish automaker's (relatively) new sport-wagon. The resulting V40 XC, like the larger XC70 wagon, incorporates a higher ride height (up by 40 mm to 173) and darkened lower body cladding with aluminum skid plates, along with a honeycomb grille and available 19-inch alloys.

While Volvo will offer the V40 XC with the full range of engines already offered in the existing V40, only the top-of-the-line, 250-horsepower 2.5-liter turbo five packs the all-wheel drive to back up the off-road looks. Deliveries will already begin next month, but like the standard V40, won't be offered in the United States for the time being.
