Ford to Sell EcoBoost Formula Racer for the Road

The impressive 1.0-liter EcoBoost-powered Formula Ford racer could spawn a limited run of road-going cars.

The other day we brought you news of a specially-built Formula Ford with a 1.0-liter EcoBoost that set a blistering time at the Nurburgring, lapping the circuit faster than a Lamborghini Aventador or Pagani Zonda. We didn't figure at the time that Ford had taken all the time to built the street-legal racer just for a headline, and now reports are suggesting that the company could be preparing to offer the impressive little racer-for-the-road to customers.

Speaking with an unidentified senior Ford executive at the company's recent "Go Further" event in Amsterdam, Evo magazine reports that Ford is planning a limited run of these road-going racers for "well under £100,000" apiece. Ford estimates the single-seater is capable of hitting 60 in under four seconds and a top speed of 159 mph... all from three cylinders with as much capacity as so many cans of beer. The small package also means the car can return 118 mpg at 35 mph or 57 mpg at 75 mph. If built, the street-legal Formula Ford would mount a serious challenge to the Ariel Atom while demonstrating Ford's EcoBoost technology.
