Comments - BMW i8 Spotted Testing in the Heat

Published: Aug 08, 2012
Description: Audi has the R8, Mercedes-Benz has the SLS AMG, Porsche only recently started doing anything BUT sportscars, but BMW doesn't have a proper sportscar to top its lineup. That's about to change...

And that wasn't sarcasm
Jackson Michael Aug 09, 2012
Thank you, Corey, for being intelligent
Wyatt Gordon Aug 09, 2012
Aaron said it perfectly. as long as the car is still exciting, fast, and good looking, there's nothing wrong with an electric motor or two. its only bad if the company goes down Prius road, which is the polar opposite of those qualities I mentioned
Andrew Palmer Aug 08, 2012
I have an open mind, but the cost/benefit ratio for most hybrids just isn't there...until you factor in smug..then well I guess you could twist the numbers any you want....but I will hold judgement til we see one one the road.
Aaron Cartwright Aug 08, 2012
Umm has anyone heard of a 918? its also a hybrid. Why are there so many close minded and jaded people on here. It's pretty sad really! Have an open mind you may learn something new and exciting that would have otherwise.
Justin Brevik Aug 08, 2012
the difference is this car is gay and the R8 and SLS are awesome
Carlos Ernesto Garcia Aug 08, 2012
This is good competition for a v8 r8 but not the sls
Corey Alan Kelley Aug 08, 2012
Im pretty sure they're talking about the electric versions of those cars...
Bala Uncc Aug 08, 2012
Beating sls? A hybrid car? No chance
Joe Grant Aug 08, 2012
They aim for it to challenge the R8/SLS yet it's a plug-in hybrid, they'll have to pull a miracle out the bag for this!
David Justice Aug 08, 2012
Cool car, but to put in the R8/SLS sports car category is a bit of a stretch. Very impressed with the MPG tho.
Shivam Kaushal Aug 09, 2012
Eww hope the stripped version comes out better
Description: A turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder gasoline engine sends 223 horsepower to the rear wheels and an electric motor providesthe front wheels with 170 hp. Combined, the i8 will pack 393 hp and 406 lb...

Because electric is, yes efficient, but when driving long distances they're impractical. Charging times are unrealistic and isn't suitable for daily commuting.
Andrew Palmer Aug 08, 2012
I like those numbers, but what's the cost?
Aaron Cartwright Aug 08, 2012
finally! a seemingly fun car to drive that gets 70mpg or better! Sure beets the karma!
Bobby Bob Aug 08, 2012
A 1.5litre turbo 3 cylinder with 200+hp is fantastic. I'd like to know the torque number tho.
Michael Dunn Aug 08, 2012
The M3 looks much better and its faster as well.
Ben August Aug 08, 2012
Question: how is it consuming 20mpg, when it is "in pure electric mode" ? Pure electric implies no gas combustion, so where is the gas consumption coming from?
John Serely Aug 08, 2012
Haha Jamie. That is not the point of this car, it is a GT car! Not a supercar! It is not all about speed, it is about comfort, styling and MPG, too!
Daniel Eads Aug 08, 2012
@Jamie, this is not suppose to be a super car. It's a car that is trying to be ridiculously fuel efficient and have GT performance. People get caught up in bhp and 0-60 times too much. Not every car is trying to be the fastest for its price.
Jamie Perigo Aug 08, 2012
Yay! My wrx will smoke this $100k plus "supercar" no way it will get 80 mpg. Apparently hybrids can claim any mpg they want with no ramifications when they don't hit that high number
Korli Jorlk Aug 08, 2012
I have to login and comment ,r u serious bala ? they're talking about sls amg hybrid ,the yellow one not the normal one .
Bala Uncc Aug 08, 2012
Zero to sixty in 5 secs? And they are calling it as super car and competing for sls?
Domi Bsaibes Aug 08, 2012
That's exactly what i was thinking chris
Matt Piccolo Aug 08, 2012
The m3 gets to 60 quicker than 5 seconds... That's a pretty sad time if they think this is competing with the r8, sls etc...
Michael Nascimento Aug 08, 2012
OMG! M3 Performance and 80MPG! This is worth whatever they are asking for it!
Jv Aug 08, 2012
A 223 hp 3 cylinder is impressive, so is 80 mpg.
Jordan Jackson Aug 08, 2012
*M3, my bad, lol
Jordan Jackson Aug 08, 2012
*to the m5 performance with 80 mpg
Jackson Michael Aug 09, 2012
Hmmmmmm I wonder what the grille looks like
Ashen Fonseka Aug 09, 2012
We're they really trying to hide that from people that little spoiler thing at the back gives it away
Jon Ashley Aug 08, 2012
honestly though, it looks good, but on second thought, i'm not sure if it will be quick enough for super car territory
Jon Ashley Aug 08, 2012
looks extremely low and really nice. can't wait to see it. honestly It would be BMW's first proper super car since the M1.
Kate Taylor Aug 08, 2012
I've seen this car down park lane along with the i3 was very nice!
Todd Muhlfelder Aug 08, 2012
Looks like a expensive one piece side panel, I do like the intake down at the bottom.
Wyatt Gordon Aug 09, 2012
@Janak, there's 2 very good reasons they're never building the Gina. 1, It would be hellishly expensive to repair if you crash it, with the flexible bodywork and all, and 2, The reason its named Gina is because the way the engine cover opens, looks a bit like the body part the name "Gina" is probably short for
Abraham Mendoza Aug 08, 2012
This is the only viable option for a sports hybrid that doesn't cost 500 thousand dollars. But go ahead, buy one of those 918's.
Aaron Cartwright Aug 08, 2012
@Erich really would you rather have a Prius that actually is a piece or a karma that doesn't run? This might just be the best everyday driver/hybrid yet. Only time will tell.
Janak Solanki Aug 08, 2012
I'll be completely honest. I'm the biggest BMW fan, but I'm really not digging this car. If you guys wanna see what they should have made, look up the BMW Gina concept on YouTube.
Abraham Mendoza Aug 08, 2012
I see it too. It just has BMW I8 design cues.
Moe Sargi Aug 08, 2012
WTF!!! Looks nothin like a celica loool
Bala Uncc Aug 08, 2012
Looks like Toyota celica
Aaron Cartwright Aug 08, 2012
@ben thinking the same thing lol
Daniel Eads Aug 08, 2012
I really don't know what a rear headlight is but the taillights have cammo.
Ben Randle Aug 08, 2012
Please tell me the rear headlights are just camo....
Stephen Reed Warren II Aug 08, 2012
It looks great from this angle
Jordan Jackson Aug 09, 2012
Ok not sure if anyone will read this now, but I just noticed a typo in my first comment, I meant to say "fins" not find, those fins are odd looking
Jackson Michael Aug 09, 2012
Lol the camo makes it look like a boxy Bugatti
Matt Greenlee Aug 08, 2012
i hate being so young. by the time I'll be able to afford them, all super cars will be stupid hybrids or electric. the rumble of a v8 or the scream of a v12 will be a thing of the past..... sucks.
Jon Ashley Aug 08, 2012
Still, i agree with darrel. why not use a turbo four pot, lighten the car a bit by taking out the hybrid technology, and focus on handling. And lower the price still. BMW isn't building this car for performance. They are building it to achieve "green" status.
Abraham Mendoza Aug 08, 2012
It's the first in a series of truly efficient sports cars. More will come, and less expensive.
Kate Taylor Aug 08, 2012
It is ammo the lights are just below the spoiler
John Serely Aug 08, 2012
@darrel: Ugh, are you kidding, this is supposed to be about 120k, not 300! Know what your talking about before you comment, haha!
John Serely Aug 08, 2012
No, timothy, your talking about the concept, this is the real deal!
Timothy Hooker Aug 08, 2012
why is it camoflauged? we all know what it looks like already
Uche Ukaegbu Aug 08, 2012
The back looks so nasty.... I don't know about the car :(
Matt Piccolo Aug 08, 2012
Yea this is just camo, those won't b the real tail lights
Jordan Jackson Aug 08, 2012
I hope ur right, lol
Jv Aug 08, 2012
It's luckly jusy camo.
Jordan Jackson Aug 08, 2012
Those find are... Odd
Abraham Mendoza Aug 08, 2012
Yeah the rims do look like V8 R8 rims, but I see nothing of the sort.
Todd Muhlfelder Aug 08, 2012
Are those Lamborghini hinges? Or some type of gullwing?
Matt Piccolo Aug 08, 2012
Yea I agree, a bir
Michael Nascimento Aug 08, 2012
Reminds me of the r8 from this angle
Abraham Mendoza Aug 08, 2012
It'll probably have a cover or be under some carpet.
Dennis Choong Aug 08, 2012
I hope the rear window pane shows off a decent looking engine rather than a battery
