Toyota 86X Drift Car by Speedhunters

What's better than a Toyota GT-86? A Toyota GT-86 with an 800-horsepower engine built for drifting.

KW Automotive is best known for its suspension systems, but this latest product, completed in conjunction with Speedhunters, is a much more ambitious project. The 86X drifter is based on the Toyota GT-86, the vehicle co-developed with Subaru and sold in America as the Scion FR-S. Built for Formula Drift driver Fredric Aasbo, the 86X recently stretched its legs at the Rudskogen track in Norway, where it spent most of its time going sideways and kicking up clouds of tire smoke.

Speedhunters fitted the 86X with a the 2JZ-GTE 3.4-liter inline six from the old Supra and tuned it to two increments: one with 640 horsepower and 592 pound-feet of torque, and another boosted to an epic 800 horsepower and 737 pound-feet. Both are mated to a Mid Valley four-speed transmission with an ACT triple disc race clutch and custom flywheel. KW, of course, supplied the 3-Way Race Kit suspension system along with several drift-spec components. The Toyota 86X was built in under 40 days and features a very prominent TRA Kyoto 6666 Customs GT Rodeo Special Rocket Bunny wide fender conversion kit to look as badass as it does.

The orange, black and silver paint job was completed by AS Technical University. The interior was stripped out and equipped with racing buckets and harnesses, GS Performance steering wheel and column, custom dash and pedal assembly. (Photos by Larry Chen, courtesy of Speedhunters)
