2013 MX-5 Roadster Breaks Cover in Japan

Subtle updates for the Miata in Japan previews export version to follow.

In a couple of years Mazda will present an all-new MX-5 it's co-developing with Alfa Romeo, but in the meantime it is giving the current model a facelift. We got a glimpse at the updated Miata from leaked brochures just the other day, but the Mazda has now released official details of its latest roadster in Japan. The latest MX-5 features a number of enhancements to keep it fresh, and while the vehicle you see here is presented for the Japanese domestic market, we can expect the changes to carry over shortly for export.

The redesigned face features a larger grille, new front fog lamp bezel, and a reshaped chin spoiler. Both fabric and power-retractable hard top models are now accented with new black and silver trim around the light bezels and door handles, with new 17-inch alloys to complete the external refinements. A new shade of dark grey trim adorns the steering wheel and dashboard, with upholstery available in fabric, Alcantara or two-tone leather trim. Mechanically speaking, the only change to speak of is a remapping of the accelerator and braking geometry.

The refreshed Roadster also features an Active Bonnet that raises the hood end in order to reduce impact to the head in the event of a pedestrian collision. The new Mazda Roadster, as it's simply known in its home market, is on sale now throughout Japan priced from 2,330,000 Yen. Stay tuned for news on the North American model.
