Rare 1966 Ford GT40 Crashed in Tennessee?

Reports indicate rare Ford classic supercar crashed on a wet road. We try not to weep.

According to a news report coming out of the state of Tennessee, an extremely rare 1966 Ford GT40 crashed on a highway over the weekend after its driver lost control. Now, it's important to bear in a mind a couple of things. For starters, this is the only picture available as of now, so we can't see the full extent of the damage (although it looks pretty bad). Secondly, we can't confirm whether this is a real GT40 or a replica. And the GT40 is one of the most popular replicars out there.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol told WCYB News that the car in question crashed last Saturday at around 2 p.m. due to wet road conditions. Fortunately the owner wasn't hurt, but a second crash occurred in the same area not long after because traffic slowed down as a result of the first accident. Ford made the GT40 in the 1960s after an aborted deal to buy Ferrari left Henry Ford II with a bitter taste in his mouth and a determination to beat Enzo Ferrari at his own game, right in the heart of Europe. The project was a huge success that instantly became a classic and came to embody the spirit of American entries in European racing.

The mid-engined V8 supercar (not to be confused with the 2005 Ford GT that aped its design) went on to dominate Le Mans, winning the French endurance race four times in a row. Only 107 examples of the GT40 were made between 1964 and 1969, and now it appears there's one less on the road.
