Porsche Cayman Deep into Development

Porsche is well on track readying the new Cayman for the LA Motor Show this November.
Porsche plan to unveil the second-generation Cayman at the LA Motor Show this November and according to our sources, the mid-engined two-seater is well into its development program. Seen here is the test prototype, captured with almost 90,000 miles on the clock. It sports the same lightweight aluminum body and styling as its sister car, the third-gen Boxster, as well as a roomier interior and upgraded six-cylinder engine.

Cayman's base engine will be a 2.7-liter flat six, instead of the current 2.9-liter unit, but with 280hp up from 262. The Cayman S is to get a 3.4-liter flat six with around 330hp, up from 315hp in today's model. A six-speed manual will be offered as standard with the choice of a seven-speed, dual-clutch auto 'box. An all-new chassis boasts a longer wheelbase and wider front track, 20-inch alloys replace the previous 19-inch set making room for bigger brakes and the suspension remains as is, so MacPherson struts up front and a multi-link arrangement at the back.
As per the latest 911, a new electro-mechanical steering system replaces hydraulic assistance, and for the Cayman S a limited-slip differential is expected to be offered as part of the Torque Vectoring package.
