SRT Viper GTS-R hits the Raceway

SRT plans to race two GTS-R models in the GT class of ALMS.

As SRT prepares its new Viper GTS-R for the American Le Mans Series, it took the new racer to the Virginia International Raceway for a spot of track testing. It won't be long before the new Viper makes its race debut, and from the latest video it looks like the GTS-R is coming along nicely. Impressive dash-cam and trackside footage of the Viper ripping around VIR give us an idea of what to expect when it eventually makes its competitive debut.

Power to the Viper GTS-R come from the same 8.4-liter V10 as the street model, which produces a total of 640hp at 6150 rpm and 600lb-ft of torque at 4950rpm. However race regulations require this to be restricted to an 8.0-liter V10, which is powering this particular Viper around the track.

Power figures for the (relatively) smaller engine have yet to be revealed, nor has information as to where the GTS-R will debut, although we expect it to race before the end of the year. ALMS chief Scott Atherton recently hailed the return of the Viper, saying, "I don't think it's possible to overstate the significance of the SRT Viper returning to the top level of professional sports car racing." Drivers for the new ALMS team include Dominik Farnbacher, Marc Goosens, Ryan Hunter-Reay, and Kuno Wittmer.
