McLaren Announce MP4-12C Spider

McLaren tease new model, announce 3 July as date of official release.

Twelve months after the MP4-12C first hit showrooms, McLaren has made the announcement we've been expecting to hear ever since the folding hard-top was spied testing on UK roads last month. McLaren Automotive's second model will be based on the same carbon-fiber chassis as its hardtop sibling as well as the same 616hp, 3.8-liter twin-turbo V8 as the recently updated model. The McLaren MP4-12C Spider's new three-piece hard-top works by folding and stacking the pieces on top of each other.

This allows for constant visibility of the British supercar's mid-mounted V8, even when the top is down. Much like its coupe-counterpart, the Spider will be able to sprint from 0-62mph in only 3.3 seconds and reach a top speed of 205mph.The lightweight three-piece folding hard-top roof was developed and built by German firm Webasto, the same team which designed the Ferrari 458 Spider's roof. For now, McLaren has left us with just the one teaser shot of the Spider but has made assurances more information and pictures will be released in the coming days.
