Maserati Gives Their New Mid-Engined Supercar a Name: GranSport

Maserati is about to build themselves a 911 Turbo fighter.

Early last month we reported that Maserati was gearing up to develop and build a new mid-engined sports car that would be targeted directly at the Porsche 911 and the Audi R8. Naturally we were intrigued with this notion especially when we learned that the likely engine will be a Ferrari-sourced 4.7-liter V8 mated to a dual-clutch (also from Ferrari) that would send power to the rear wheels. Then things went silent for a few weeks that is until now.

In a new report coming from Evo, this new mid-engined Maserati, likely to be called the GranSport, will debut sometime in 2015. According to Maserati boss Harold Wester in an interview with Evo, the Italian automaker's vision for the car is very clear: "Imagine having something like the Alfa Romeo 4C but for Maserati. It would have a carbon fiber monocoque and a mid-engined layout, just like the 4C, as this gives the stylists the most freedom to design something really stunning." Now, you should be made aware of the fact that Wester is CEO for both Maserati and Alfa Romeo, which are both under the Fiat S.p.A. umbrella (along with Ferrari and now Chrysler).

Along with the upcoming redesigned Quattroporte sedan and Kubang SUV, Maserati is clearly looking to expand their lineup. This rendering that was originally published by Evo does slightly resemble the 4C, but the Maserati would clearly be a larger car. The reason is that it would need to be big enough to handle the 454hp 4.7-liter V8 instead of the turbocharged four-cylinder that'll power the 4C. The V8 will be mounted longitudinally, hence the longer wheelbase. In other words, it'll be roughly the same size as the Ferrari 458 Italia.

Evo also points out that the GranSport will have lightweight construction thanks to extensive use of carbon fiber, with a targeted weight of around 2,645 lbs. Pricing is also set to be competitive with its main rivals and Maserati is looking at a production number of 1,500 to 2,000 units a year. Besides from the 458 Italia and Audi R8, Maserati is aiming directly at the Porsche 911 Turbo and not just the base 911 or Carrera S. Is it just us or does it sound like Maserati is about to build one incredible supercar?
