The Mercedes tuning maestro has developed a high-performance hybrid project with Protean Electric.

with V12 engines
capable of several hundred horses and torque north of 1,000lb-ft, Brabus has decided to delve into new waters by developing an eco-friendly diesel hybrid. The 'Technology Project Hybrid' combines a 2.2-liter diesel engine with two in-wheel electric motors from Protean Electric that each churn out 110hp and 590lb-ft of torque. When combined with the oil-burning engine, the car can sprint from 0-62mph in 7.4 seconds.
According to Protean Electric, fuel economy is apparently boosted by up to 30 percent using the electric motors in applications such as the Technology Project Hybrid. Brabus didn't confirm these numbers nor did they release details about the size of the battery pack or the additional weight of the complete electric system. Protean CEO Bob Purcell said of the project: "We're pleased to work with Brabus to demonstrate what Protean's in-wheel electric drive can deliver to the world. Our in-wheel motors not only provide significant performance improvement, but do so in a very responsible way."
Ferrari recently announced plans of a front- and mid-engine V12 HY-KERS system for future hybrid cars, and with Brabus now getting in on the act the era of high-performance hybrids is very much upon us.
