Actually most companies always try to compare and beat bmw in alot of segments. BMW usually is one of the main benchmarks

Also, to compare this to a CTS-V or GT500 makes little sense. The intention was to make a great touring car, with extraordinary power, that offers luxury throughout. So the American beasts, while great, are in a totally different class.
Let me give my justification for the cost. First, it's the most exclusive series that BMW produces, second, it was handed over to the boys down at "M" and third, it is a convertible. Add it all up and you're looking at why this may seem "Pricey"

The r8 is a looker more than a crazy fast car. Don't get me wrong it is very fast. But it looks faster than it really is. I'd call it a fun to drive looker. More than a track beast.

I would buy the m6 over the V not because i dont think the V is good, but because i personally like the styling of the M6 better and because its my favorite brand and you are right that thats more emotion and not logical but thats how life goes.

Slower than the CTS-V coupe (and the interior/exterior is worse too), Corvette, Mustang, etc. the Boxter is even almost this fast at 4.7 and WAY nicer for half the price. For this much money BMW is ripping people off.
