Relax Rotary Lovers, the Mazda RX-8 Spirit R Gets Extra 1K Production Run

Mazda is planning on building 1,000 more RX-8 models due to popular demand.

Mazda is sending this generation's Wankel rotary engine into retirement with the Mazda RX-8 Spirit limited edition, however the automaker is giving the popular Japan-only sports car one last stand with an extra 1,000-unit production run. According to Mazda, popular demand for the rotary-powered four-door model was so much that it justifies the doubling of planned units for production.

The Mazda RX-8 Spirit R special edition features Recaro Sprint R bucket seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, special badging, blacked-out headlights, enhanced traction control, bigger brakes and a black transmission tunnel trim. The special limited edition sits on a set of bronze 19-inch forged aluminum wheels. A six-speed manual transmission version is available, based on the RX-8 Type RS, while a Type E-based six-speed automatic transmission is also available. The manual version has proven more popular than its automatic counterpart, constituting 66 percent of all orders.
