Cadillac ELR Could Arrive in 2014

The expansion of the Volt's technology will soon spread to Cadillac.

It's no secret that General Motors intended from the get-go to build other models based on the Chevrolet Volt's technology. The only question was which division would be the first to have their own extended range plug-in besides Chevy? According to a new report coming from Automotive News, Cadillac clearly appears to be that brand. The 2014 ELR will likely very much resemble the Cadillac Converj concept that made its first appearance at the 2009 Detroit Auto Show.

Although it generated solid reviews at the time, it seemed unlikely that GM would put such a car into production. Fast forward a few years and it makes more sense than ever for the automaker to make further use of this technology. Besides its stunning design (based on the concept), the ELR could actually make money for Cadillac while GM loses money on every Volt sold. The reason is that the ELR, under the Cadillac brand, will command a higher base price that will make up the difference. Other sources have confirmed that ELR prototypes are now testing near Detroit, so we expect the ELR to make its official debut next January at the 2013 Detroit Auto Show.
