Comments - BMW i8 Production Model Speculatively Rendered

Published: Apr 17, 2012
Description: It won't be long before the hybrid supercar is seen on the streets, but while BMW apply the finishing touches to the i8 we'll have to make do with spy shots and renderings. Compared to the i...

The last gen 5 series never grew on me. Just ugly for the sake of being different. This is at least interesting though.
Joshua Maghiar Apr 17, 2012
I'm amazed to see so many people bashing on this car. I shouldn't though, because with every new BMW model, people say it looks terrible. And then they see the car in person and the design begins to grow on them. I'm a BMW enthusiast. Personally the only two other designs that I like more than the i8 is the BMW E9 3.0CSL and the all mighty M1.
Description: To recap, the i8 concept combines two drive systems: an electric motor and internal combustion engine (mounted at the rear), which combine to produce up to 354hp and around 80mpg; 0-62mph comes in at ...

I think in those markets especially with government subsidies it may be a reasonable contender.
Dan Rather Apr 18, 2012
In some cases the tax is recurrent and you have to pay it yearly. I know a Norwegian who had to pay something like $12,000 in taxes on his focus RS. Most countries heavily tax once the engine is past 2l this one is only 1.5l so it will avoid that
Dan Rather Apr 18, 2012
I feel like this car was made more for the European market where they offer a lot of subsidies for hybrid and low co2 producing cars and will heavily tax cars tax use a lot of gas, have high co2 emissions and sometimes based on displacement.
Tim Wateva Apr 18, 2012
Stunning looks but with that price tag and the spec... I'd get something else
Bob Turefannt Apr 18, 2012
Everything about this car got me excited until I saw the price. I think it should be around 100-120k.
Dan Rather Apr 17, 2012
A lot of the price has to do with keeping it light weight most of the car is going to be made of composites. A lot of the formed carbon fiber on the body is going to be a lot more expensive and time consuming to produce than aluminum.
Cody Jacques Apr 17, 2012
haha hardly, all the money in this car went towards cosmetics and its "BMW" badge. No hybrid system cost $100k to produce
Luis A Villalpando Apr 17, 2012
Its got the looks, now all it needs is the 0-60 time and additional power I mean unless its insanely light. Oh and that price needs to be checked out because its much to high for the product they are offering and its all because of the hybrid system which is very expensive to develop.
Jason Ofhorrormoviefame Apr 17, 2012
That is still way farther than other electric cars and WAY farther than most peoples commute even if it's optimistic. I RARELY drive my Corvette 100 miles in a day and the 2.5 roadster hits 60 in 3.7 which is faster than any stock BMW using 0 fuel.
Christo Savaides Apr 17, 2012
BMW needs to lower the price and the 0-60 time.
Dan Rather Apr 17, 2012
Tesla doesn't have a 300 mi range it has an EPA 244 mi range which is usually pretty optimistic. Plus when u push it to its limit that range isn't going to last.
Rick Ross Apr 17, 2012
But it's also a Tesla.
Cody Jacques Apr 17, 2012
These stats for 160k... wouldnt touch it with a stick! Its now a car for the wealthy wife who thinks anything over 100hp is a big number and must be fast
Duncan Jolley Apr 17, 2012
It looks cool, sounds cool but the only problem is the price
Brendon Davis Apr 17, 2012
I'm worried that at this price, people really won't care about fuel economy. It's been claimed to hit 60 in 4.7 seconds.. We'll see.
Jason Ofhorrormoviefame Apr 17, 2012
It's great but the Tesla roadster was even better using no gas, 300 mile range, and 0-60 in 3.9 for 110k. My point isn't that it isn't impressive, just that nobody spending 160k cares about their mpg and if they did there are faster better options.
Logan LeMonnier Apr 17, 2012
That's actually incredible. 80mpg with over 350 hp? It's true people don't care about mpg but look at the thing. It's amazing all around
Cody Matthews Apr 17, 2012
Porsche 918 will be doing under 4 sec...
Carl Andrew Muniz Tirella Apr 17, 2012
the should make a gasoline version
Jason Ofhorrormoviefame Apr 17, 2012
Somebody spending 160k probably doesn't care so much about their mpg. They might care about being green and the novelty of a new model but they will def care that they spent 160k and their sports car can't go to 60 mph as fast as the competition.
Bob Turefannt Apr 18, 2012
I don't know, I think the back looks very aggressive.
Pratik Parija Apr 17, 2012
All for the sake of aerodynamics
Oscar Galvan Apr 17, 2012
I thought I was the only one who thought that
Kenneth Williams Apr 17, 2012
Yea the kidneys are signature and definitely not a handicap.
Patrick Joseph Apr 17, 2012
The cosmetic handicap on all BMWs ? That's the silliest thing I've heard in a long time. You're the kind of guy that would paint a mustache on a Picasso
Dan Anton Apr 17, 2012
@Andrew, It may not need a spoiler. those grooves on the side behind the door leading to the rear end are supposed to aid in aerodynamics so they may act like one. Just an idea.
Dan Rather Apr 17, 2012
This is a fan rendering by Sonny Lim from behence.net not what actually will look like. I think car buzz should give him credit for his work.
Andrew Hossann Apr 17, 2012
I think it should have some kind of spoiler
Aislin Cooper Apr 17, 2012
Eh.. I'd like it more with a bit less of a futuristic look honestly
Cody Jacques Apr 17, 2012
I dont think toning down is needed just tuning up of the engine to match that super car style they've chosen.
Cody Jacques Apr 17, 2012
The trademark grille is the cosmetic handycap on all of BMW's cars.
Peter Squire Apr 17, 2012
Some toning down is still needed IMO
Judah Lindvall Apr 17, 2012
Don't like the grill. I mean, I know it's like their trademark but… it doesn't match.
Tyler Cook Apr 17, 2012
Yeah I agree, the front end is not my favorite. I think it looked better with the blue accents as well. I wish it had better performance specs. Also. Guess that what you get with an all electric car though
Taylor Little Apr 17, 2012
I dislike the front end but the car as a whole I like. I can't wait to see what the production model is going to look like.
Kenneth Williams Apr 17, 2012
I'd like to see them render one with black accents on the side also.
Abraham Mendoza Apr 17, 2012
Wow, doesn't look too far from the concept. Can't wait to see this on the streets.
Janak Solanki Apr 17, 2012
Ehh not too crazy about it. I really miss the old style BMWs like the 850ci, what a classic.
Abraham Mendoza Apr 17, 2012
Haha, no it doesn't.
Troi Stoessel Apr 17, 2012
To Al. Research BMW history: this looks like the newer version of the M1
Jason W. Evers Apr 17, 2012
I would choose a different car.
Greg Kenerly Apr 17, 2012
Love this angle. I hope they keep the blue from the concept and you're able to choose your own. Kinda like the R8... I'd do black/red. What combos would you guys choose?
Al Tungupon Apr 17, 2012
The long front overhang is so un-BMW.
Michael Evans Apr 17, 2012
It looks like it was hit in the front and back and it popped like a tent
Tyler Cook Apr 17, 2012
The lack of glass doors make it look smaller
