the purpose of 5 mph bumpers was to avoid damage right? so whos dumb, twisted idea was it to design them in such a way that makes you want to crash them into a giant pile of revving chainsaws every time you look at them???

Lou, like many imports of the era they were mandated by US law and begrudgingly affixed by factories. They were never designed that way. So yes, horrid.
