Honda discontinues entry-level Civic DX as it gives the 2013 model a comprehensive refresh following the 2012 model’s negative press.
leaked a couple of images of the facelifted Civic a few weeks ago, and has now revealed the updated 2013 Civic Sedan and Coupe in full as it made its live debut at the Los Angeles Auto Show this week. As you may remember, the ninth-generation 2012 Civic was met with terrible press reviews, Consumer Reports denied it a "recommended" rating and dropped it to the bottom of its list, and CEO Takanobu Ito subsequently issued an apology to the public.
That's why just over a year after launch, a facelifted version of Honda's top-selling sedan has been rolled out, debuting in LA at the same time as hitting dealerships across the country. The 2013 Civic has been comprehensively updated, receiving changes you'd expect of a mid-cycle refresh impressively implemented with a single model year. Cosmetic updates have been restricted to the sedan in the form of a new, more sculpted hood, a black honeycomb mesh grille, new clear-lens corner lights, trunk lid, taillights, and restyled rear bumper, while every Civic sedan and coupe has a freshened interior, chassis and body structure.
The chassis receives a recalibrated steering set-up with a faster ratio, a retuned suspension with stiffer wheels and front spring rates, and thicker anti-roll bars for better driving dynamics. Honda also installed bigger brakes on all the gas-powered, automatic non-Si Civics. Honda has discontinued the entry-level DX trim, but continues to offer the LX, EX, EX-L, and Si models. The same 140-hp 1.8-liter four-pot continues to be paired with either a five-speed manual or automatic transmission, while the Si models receives the same 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit rated at 201 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque, sent to the front wheels via a six-speed manual.
The Hybrid again pairs a 1.5-liter four with an electric motor good for a combined 110 hp. Addressing one of the 2012 model's biggest complaints, an inferior, noisy interior, Honda has refurbished the cabin in soft-touch materials, a new headliner, and black carpeting, and added a thicker windshield and front-door glass with additional soundproofing materials. For the first time, an all-black leather and cloth upholstery can also be ordered for a classy finish. Standard equipment now includes a multi-view rearview camera, Bluetooth audio and phone connectivity, and a color i-MID display.
