BMW 4 Series Concept Headed for Detroit

Just like the coupe counterpart to the 5 Series is called the 6 Series, the next 3 Series coupe will carry the 4 Series name, and will debut in concept form at the Detroit Auto Show in January.

Don't get confused by yet another numerical addition to the BMW lineup. The German automaker announced months ago that the upcoming two-door version of its 3 Series sedan will be rechristened the 4 Series. The apparent logic behind this change is simply to differentiate the coupe from its sedan counterpart just like Audi has done with its A4/A5. Everybody getting this? Good, because Bimmerpost is reporting that the 4 Series concept will debut this January at the Detroit Auto Show.

We've also seen quite a few spy shots of test mules on the road, so don't be surprised to see the production version itself arrive sometime later next year. Like the outgoing 3 Series two-door, the new 4 Series will also be available in both coupe and cabrio body styles as well as the M high performance version, now redubbed the M4. We also know that BMW is currently developing the 4 Series Gran Coupe, a four-door version of the same car only with a sleeker roofline. Expect to see the latter arrive for model year 2015.
