If you're looking for the biggest bang for your buck and more power but less weight, the new Supersport R of the classic Caterham Seven could be the best prospect out there.
As far as high-performance sportscars go, 180 horsepower isn't a lot. But when you're talking about a Caterham Seven - one of the lightest no-frills roadsters on the market - that's a boat-load. Consider that the Supersport model (derived from the racing version but homologated for the street) released just this past April offers up just 140 horsepower from a 1.6-liter Ford Sigma four. Now Caterham has followed up with the more extreme Supersport R, packing a 2.0-liter Ford Duratec with 180 horsepower on tap.
That's a 25% power boost over the Supersport and 5hp more than the R300. The first new reveal since Caterham and Renault announced the new Alpine joint venture, the Supersport R also includes a new five-speed gearbox, Avon CR500 tires, track-bred springs and dampers, a unique steering wheel with shift indicator light, and composite racing buckets with four-point harnesses. With just 535 kg to schlepp around, the upgraded lightweight package ought to deliver some blistering performance. And at just £24,995 (tax in) for the DIY kit or £27,995 for the completed car, it presents a compelling bang for your buck.
