VDS GT 001 Warps Vertigo

Belgian racing team puts together its own sportscar and racer.

Ever hear of the Gillet Vertigo? We could hardly blame you if you haven't, because it's about as obscure a car as you're going to find. That is, assuming you can actually find one. It's made in Belgium and powered by a Maserati V8. But this takes "obscure" to new levels. Based on the Vertigo is the VDS GT 001. It packs the same 4.2-liter V8 with 480 horsepower mated to a six-speed sequential gearbox, only draped in different, more squared-off bodywork than the Gillet and earmarked for motor racing competition.

The body is made of carbon fiber (of course) to keep it below 990 kg (2183 lbs). It's the brainchild of one Raphael van der Straeten, who as you might have guessed is Belgian as well, and has a background in racing Mustangs in Europe - a discipline from which the design for the GT 001 was said to have been drawn. As such there's a track-only R version in the works as well to compete in sportscar racing. As it stands, only 22 examples of the VDS GT 001 will be built. We're still trying to figure out if that's a good thing or a bad thing. (Pictured in dark grey is the GT 001, in crimson the R version and in black the Gillet Vertigo on which it is based.)
