With 275 horsepower and 13 percent more torque than the previous top-of-the-range R500, the Superlight R600 is Caterham’s new flagship race model and the ultimate expression of Colin Chapman's timeless design.
British race and road car-maker Caterham has announced its most extreme Seven to date, the Superlight R600, which is set to debut next year in a new race series. Using a similar powerplant to the SP/300.R, the R600 is powered by a supercharged 2.0-liter Ford Duratec four, which sends 275 horsepower and 200 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox and Titan limited-slip differential. That may not sound like much, but in a flyweight racer it's more than enough to melt your face.
Priced at £44,995, the Superlight R600 is the fastest and most powerful Seven Caterham has ever made, and the first to feature forced induction technology. "Caterham racing just got even more interesting," said Caterham motorsport director Simon Lambert. "As the fastest Seven we've ever built, this will provide our existing R300 racers with a real step up and a new and exciting challenge, even for experienced drivers. The R600 represents an increase in aggressiveness, although the linear power delivery of the supercharged engine makes it superbly driveable, much like the R300." And there you have it.
The Superlight R600 Championship will form the top echelon of the Caterham racing series, and will appeal to drivers that have graduated other Caterham championships and are looking for a more thrilling challenge. The latest Seven can be bought as a new car, but existing R300 owners can upgrade their cars to R600 spec at an as-yet undetermined (or undisclosed) price.
