Infiniti Emerg-E Not Heading for Production

Hybrid supercar concept to stay in concept form, according to the latest reports.

If you were bummed out by the recent report that Lotus canceled plans to build a new Esprit, we're afraid we've got some more bad news for you. According to Autocar magazine, Infiniti has given the Emerg-E concept the red light. The showcar debuted at the Geneva Motor Show this past March to rave reviews, embodying not only the essence of Infiniti's new design language but also the prospect of a shapely hybrid supercar that could serve as a halo vehicle to bring customers into Infiniti showrooms.

Things looked good when the premium division from Nissan brought the Emerg-E concept to the Goodwood Festival of Speed and let Mark Webber of Red Bull Racing (which Infiniti sponsors and sister-company Renault powers) drive it up the hill to the applause of the gathered fans. Unfortunately it now seems that, while its design and hybrid powertrain could find their ways into other Infiniti production vehicles, the car itself won't ever see the light of day. That's got to be bad news as well for Lotus, which was tipped to potentially get the contract to build the production version of the Emerg-E concept atop the platform that underpins the Evora.
