Gumpert Has a New Buyer

An as-yet unnamed investor is reportedly coming to Gumpert's rescue. But who is it, and will they resume production of the otherworldly Apollo supercar?

Between Artega, Melkus, De Tomaso, Lola and Cosworth, we've been saddened to report on a number of small European sportscar and racecar manufacturing declaring bankruptcy lately. So it comes as good news that one such company appears to be back on the road to recovery. That automaker is Gumpert, the German producer of the Apollo supercar. The company went belly-up back in August, but reports from Europe now indicate that Gumpert has found a new buyer.

Beautiful it is not, but the Gumpert Apollo is a massively capable supercar, with a twin-turbo 4.2-liter V8 with between 650 and 800 horsepower (depending on spec) for a 0-62 time starting at 3.1 seconds and a top speed in excess of 224 mph. The rebodied Tornante was unveiled with coachwork by Carrozzeria Touring, but never reached its final stages of development. The German automaker has yet to confirm who the new buyer is, but AutoVisie reports that a new investor has been secured to ensure Gumpert's future viability. Whoever it is, we hope they resume production of the Apollo and development of the Tornante forthwith.
