Acura is Back with their NSX Concept at Detroit

Acura's much anticipated NSX Concept is finally revealed at the 2012 Detroit Auto Show.

Since it went out of production in 2005, the Acura NSX has been ingrained in the memories and hearts of countless sports car lovers. Remember, this is the car that when it was launched back in 1990, forced Ferrari and Lamborghini to actually build interiors that weren't the equivalent in quality of an eight-year-olds cardboard-based science project. The original car was such a phenomenal piece of machinery that people have literally begged Acura to revive it for the past five years or so.

And the Japanese automaker has finally obliged. Revealed at this year's Detroit Auto Show, the Acura NSX Concept is once again a stunning thing to see. Like its forbearer, the NSX Concept is powered by the next-generation VTEC V6 with direct-injection and mounted mid-ship, sending power to the rear wheels. One key difference, however: this time the engine is given an extra boost thanks to an electric motor. Combined with the automaker's excellent Super Handling All Wheel Drive hybrid system, it can instantly generate negative or positive torque to the front wheel during cornering. No word yet regarding exact power figures.

The engine is mated to a dual clutch transmission with a built-in electric motor that allows for supercar acceleration while "offering outstanding efficiency." Acura claims the NSX Concept champions true racing philosophy of an extremely favorable power-to-weight ratio. "Like the first NSX, we will again express high performance through engineering efficiency," according to Takanobu Ito, president and CEO of Honda. So the big question is whether it will make production. And we're happy to report a definitive "yes."

Acura says to expect the NSX production car in the next three years and that it will be built at an as of now unnamed facility in Ohio, USA. Developing is currently taking place by an engineering team led by Honda R&D Americas. Oh happy day.
