Audi Releases More Photos of A2 Concept

Audi unveils even more images of its upcoming A2 EV concept before Frankfurt.

A few days ago, Audi revealed several sketches of its new A2 EV concept that's set to debut next week at the Frankfurt Auto Show. And now, the German automaker has again provided us with another, and this time clearer, set of computer generated pictures. Basically, the A2 is Audi's answer to the BMW i3. It's powered by an 85kW electric motor and mated to a single-speed transmission that sends power to the front wheels.

It has a maximum of 199 lb-ft of torque and an estimated range of 125 miles.Total charging time is around four hours using a 240-volt outlet. It can go from 0 to 60mph in around nine seconds and has a top speed of 93mph. Constructed mainly from aluminum and carbon fiber, total weight is limited to 2,535 pounds. Described as a "premium-standard space concept," the A2 is yet another example of Audi's vision of what future electric mobility will be like. Although it measures at just over 12 ft. long and barely 5 ft. high, the A2 supposedly offers enough room for four passengers.

Some interesting features include a dark glass roof that switches to transparency by pushing a button, and the next phase of LED headlight technology, which is known as matrix beam. This is described as a "package of LEDs and micro reflectors that generate a high-resolution and non-glaring high-beam light." There are also intelligent tail lights that can adapt their illumination to the visibility conditions. Even the rear fog light is advanced, as it's produced by laser diodes and appears as a red triangle warning symbol on the road. The interior is also an advancement in terms of driver and passenger features.

The center console is attached to the driver's seat and the rear console extends forward between the two rear seats. In addition, there's storage space under the fold-up seat cushions. Although it looks more like a household electrical appliance, the A2 concept is an intriguing vision of just what will be possible in the very near future in terms of EV and lightweight technologies. Audi says they'll have more details in just a few days at Frankfurt.
