Frankfurt 2011: 2012 Subaru XV

Subaru unveils their all-new XV sport crossover at Frankfurt.

Subaru has just unveiled their all-new crossover, the XV, at this year's Frankfurt Auto Show. Before today, the Japanese automaker revealed a series of teaser sketches of the outgoing Impreza Sport Outback's replacement. We've already seen the XV in concept form and the production version is nearly identical. It will be powered by the new generation of 1.6- and 2.0-liter Boxer engines. Each is mated to a new CVT transmission, along with a newly developed "Auto Start Stop System" that further helps to improve fuel efficiency.

European buyers will also have the option of a Boxer 2.0-liter diesel. According to Subaru, the XV is an "Urban Adventure" vehicle that's perfect for "exciting, lively, yet stress-free use in the city." The exterior design greatly resembles that of the also new 2012 Impreza, on which it's based off. However, the XV features a more spacious passenger compartment and cargo area. The ride height has also been increased. The exterior's side cladding looks pretty good with its flowing lines and sharp creases. There are also the now standard Subaru hexagon grille and hawk eye headlights up front.

Interestingly, the corners of the front and rear bumpers were designed with special edges that enhance the aerodynamic performance and also contribute to better fuel efficiency. The interior features a multi-function display with a 4.3-inch LCD screen equipped with an advanced infotainment system. Exact pricing and fuel economy figures haven't been announced, but the 2012 XV will arrive in showrooms in the coming months.
