Green Debuts: Toyota EV Racing Prototype Unveiled

Toyota Motorsport GmbH plans to set the new official speed record for an EV at the Nurburgring with its unnamed prototype.

Toyota Motorsport GmbH (TMG) has released new details about their attempt to set an EV speed record at the Nurburgring on August 29th. The EV racer prototype seen in the photos hasn't been given an official name, but it does feature a 41.5KW lithium-ceramic battery that powers two electric motors producing 375hp and 435 lb-ft of torque. The two-seater weighs just 970kg (2,138 lbs) and can accelerate from 0-62 mph in just 3.9 seconds and has a top speed of 162 mph.

Toyota aims to beat the current EV record of 9 minutes and 1.338 seconds set by the Peugeot EX1 concept not long ago. According to the official press release, they would "like to surprass this time by more than a few seconds in order to demonstrate just how far the technology has developed since TMG began working on KERS systems in 2007." TMG "expects to hit lap-record pace immediately, with additional days scheduled as back-up." What's interesting is that TMG would like to begin commercial sales of its electric powetrain technology in 2012. Offical lap times will be available soon after any successful record attempts.
